Sunnyside developed and organized schools and churches in the area and in 1950 created its own water district and volunteer fire department. The city annexed Sunnyside and the Sunnyside Volunteer Fire Department was replaced with Houston Fire Station 46 in 1956 at the corner of Corinth and Stassen streets.

In 1976 a new Station 46 was built at the corner of Scott and Corder.
